What It’s Like to Work with a Professional Organizer
When It Makes Sense to Work with a Professional Organizer
Let’s be honest—most people don’t dream of spending their Saturday wrestling with clutter. Decluttering sounds simple enough in theory . . . until you start. You open a drawer, find a tangle of half-dead cables, a birthday card from 2015, and a wave of decision paralysis.
You close the drawer. Maybe next weekend.
But clutter doesn’t just take up space in your home—it takes up space in your head. And when life is busy (or downright hard), the idea of decluttering can feel not just unappealing, but impossible.
That’s where a professional organizer can help, big time.
A Common Concern
Sometimes people worry I’m going to judge them.
Or that I’ll tell them what to keep and what to throw away.
One prospective client once told me she was concerned she might “pull the wool over my eyes” — as if I had an agenda, and she might need to work around it.
I don’t come in with an agenda.
And I don’t decide what stays or goes.
You make every decision.
My role is to guide the process, ask the right questions, and help you move forward when things feel stuck. The Dutch have a nice word for this: opruimcoach.
What It’s Actually Like
We start with what matters to you — your goals, your preferences, what you want your home to feel like.
Then we work through things together, one category at a time.
We take items out.
We look at them.
And you decide what belongs in your life now.
Sometimes I’ll challenge a decision — but only based on what you’ve said matters to you.
It’s not about my opinion.
It’s about helping you see an item from a different angle, so you can decide more clearly whether it truly belongs.
So What Does a Professional Organizer Actually Do?
It’s a bit like working with a fitness coach.
You’re not left to figure it out on your own — you have guidance, structure, and support throughout the process.
In practice, that means we go through your things together, category by category.
We take items out, look at them, and you decide what belongs in your life now — while I guide the process, ask questions, and help you keep moving when choices feel difficult or unclear.
For some clients, that means working side by side. For others — especially when their time is limited — it can mean I take on more of the practical work, so your involvement can be lighter when needed, while decisions still reflect what matters to you.
That flexibility means the process can adapt to your time and energy — while still moving forward in a thoughtful, effective way.
My Role
I’m there to support you in three key ways:
To keep things moving
It’s surprisingly easy to stall when you’re on your own. I help you stay focused, without rushing you.
To bring perspective
Because I’m not attached to your things, I can often see patterns and possibilities more clearly.
To support decisions
Not by telling you what to do — but by helping you get clarity on what matters to you.
It’s Not Just About Organizing
Organizing is the visible part.
But the real shift happens earlier — in the decisions.
I wrote more about that here: Why Organizing Doesn’t Work — Until You Declutter First
Part of my role is helping you give yourself permission to let go of what isn’t serving you.
What you keep becomes more intentional.
What you let go of becomes easier over time.
And the space starts to reflect who you are now — not who you used to be, or who you feel you “should” be.
Why Tidying Can Be Hard to Do Alone
Decluttering is simple in theory.
But that doesn’t make it easy.
On your own, it’s common to:
- get distracted
- feel unsure where to start
- circle back to the same items
- lose momentum partway through
Working together adds structure, pace, and clarity — which makes it much easier to keep going.
When Support Helps Most
There are times when having support makes a real difference:
- when you’re moving or renovating
- during life transitions (loss, divorce, downsizing)
- when things have built up over time
- when you’ve tried to start, but can’t quite get traction
- when focus and decision-making take more effort — for example, for people with ADHD
Not because you can’t do it yourself —
but because support brings structure, experience, and a clearer path forward.
You Deserve a Home or Work Space That Supports You
Not drains you. Not overwhelms you. An organized place where you feel confident, inspired and uniquely yourself.
That transformation starts with a single conversation.
No commitment or cost. Just space to talk about what you need and how I might help.
